Structure of Pricing for Painted Works

Method Based on Surface Area (Height × Width in Inches)

In the primary art market (galleries, art fairs, artist studios), pricing paintings based on surface area (height × width in inches) is an established and widely accepted method, especially for cohesive bodies of work.

The determining variable is the price per square inch ($/in²), which increases based on the artist's level of recognition and legitimacy.

1. Basic Formula (Industry Standard)

Price = Height (in) × Width (in) × Rate

( $ / in² ). Example: 30″ × 40″ = 1,200 in²

2. Typical rates according to career stage

Emerging Artist

  • $1.50 to $3.00 / in²

  • Generally self-represented or beginning gallery representation

  • Limited exhibition history

Example: 1,200 in² × $2.50 = $3,000

Mid-Career Artist

  • $4.00 to $8.00 / in²

  • Regular exhibitions

  • Established sales history

  • Early curatorial or institutional support

Example: 1,200 in² × $6.00 = $7,200

Established Artist

  • $10.00 to $25.00 / in²

  • Long exhibition history

  • Presence in major museum or private collections

  • Stable demand in the secondary market

  • Representation by recognized galleries

Example: 1,200 in² × $15.00 = $18,000

"Blue-chip" Artist / International Recognition

  • $30.00 to $100.00+ / in²

  • Auction sales history

  • Museum retrospectives

  • Representation by major international galleries

Example: 1,200 in² × $40.00 = $48,000

3. Adjustments made in galleries (crucial element)

Psychology of Sizes

Many galleries apply a tiered pricing system for very large formats:

  • Small sizes (less than 500 in²): full price

  • Medium sizes (500 to 1,500 in²): standard price

  • Monumental sizes (2,000 in² and above): 10% to 30% discount

Goal: To prevent wall art from becoming inaccessible.

4. Adjustments related to medium and complexity

Factor                      Adjustment

Oil vs. Acrylic                 Oil often justifies +10% to 20%

Heavy Impasto / Mixed Techniques    +15% to 30%

Works on Paper               -20% to -40%

Cohesive Series               Maintain strict consistency

Signature Subject / Iconic Motif    Higher rate justified

5. Consistency Rule (fundamental)

Once a price is set:

  • Do not change prices arbitrarily

  • Do not offer discounts without gallery approval

  • Increase gradually (10% to 15%) after sustained sales

  • Maintain the same prices across all platforms and galleries

Inconsistent pricing damages long-term value more than slow sales.

6. Example Pricing Grid for an Established Artist

Format           Surface (po²)               Rate(15 $/po²)             Price

16 × 20.          320                              15 $                             4 800 $

24 × 30           720                              15 $                           10 800 $

30 × 40           1 200                           15 $                           18 000 $

40 × 60           2 400                           12 $*                          28 800 $

7. Curatorial Perspective (key element)

For an established artist, the price reflects not only the size of the work but also:

  • Proven demand

  • Institutional confidence

  • Critical discourse

  • Rarity and consistency of the career

Collectors often purchase an artistic trajectory, far more than just a painted surface.
