Solo Exhibition

Claude Gauthier

Presented from May 29 to July 30, 2025

Overview

Body and Matter is a solo exhibition by photographer Claude Gauthier exploring the intimate relationship between the human body and materiality. Through a series of photographic works, the exhibition proposes a visual dialogue in which the body merges with surfaces and textures, blurring the boundaries between physical presence and abstraction.

The images reveal forms suspended in time, evoking both the fragility of existence and the expressive force of matter. Through a subtle interplay of light, texture, and composition, Gauthier creates a contemplative space where identity, memory, and material presence converge.

Artistic Approach

Claude Gauthier’s practice exists at the intersection of photography and sculptural thinking. The body is not treated solely as a subject, but as a surface of transformation. By fragmenting, layering, and texturing visual elements, the artist expands the perception of the body beyond representation, toward a sensory and experiential encounter.

Each image suggests a tension between embodiment and dissolution, inviting viewers to question the boundaries between skin and substance, flesh and texture, individual identity and universal matter.

Conceptual Axes

The works presented in Body and Matter unfold around several key conceptual axes:

  • Emergence and dissolution: the coexistence of defined forms and uncertain spaces

  • Surface and depth: materiality as a carrier of memory

  • Embodied presence: the body positioned between figuration and abstraction

  • Light and texture: visual energy generated through contrast and tactility

These elements collectively shape an introspective and sensorial reading of the exhibition.
